Medina is celebrated for containing the mosque of Muhammad, and so ranks as the second holiest city of Islam, after Mecca. It was also the place where Muhammad and his followers left after attacks against them in Mecca, now known as the Hijrah.

About Medina

Medina covers an area of 340.7 sq. miles (883 square Km) and is estimated to have a population of 1.3 million people being a city in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia. It is the second holiest city in Islam, and the burial place of Muhammad.

Hejaz Railway Station

Built in 1917 to transport pilgrims to Mecca for the haj, it did not last long - World War I broke out in 1918 and the railway was used by the Ottomans to supply their troops and therefore was regularly subject to attack by “Lawrence of Arabia” et al.
