Medina is celebrated for containing the mosque of Muhammad, and so ranks as the second holiest city of Islam, after Mecca. It was also the place where Muhammad and his followers left after attacks against them in Mecca, now known as the Hijrah.

About Medina

Medina covers an area of 340.7 sq. miles (883 square Km) and is estimated to have a population of 1.3 million people being a city in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia. It is the second holiest city in Islam, and the burial place of Muhammad.

Ottoman Fortress in Madinah

The city of Medina, which was once under the Ottoman sovereign, still have remains of the Ottoman Empire. This is an Ottoman fortress comprising of several storeys located between the Prophet`s mosque and Quba Mosque.
